House Kozel had never been notable for anything other than its own nobility.

The Kozels were noble, yes, but their sons were simply average lords and knights, their daughters respectable enough ladies, but never the ones who had countless offers of marriage arrangements from the other houses of Kalria. They treated those in their service well enough, were never known as harsh masters - but nor were they known for being the most generous of the generous.

House Kozel was known for one thing among the houses of Kalria, and that one thing was being average.

The current lord and lady of Kozel, Anton and Mariya, didn't have any ambition to break the old tradition and be anything greater than they were known for, and that inertia passed right on to most of their children. Pavlo, the oldest son, did well enough at his lessons in administering their domain, but wasn't exceptional; Olena, their first daughter, was fair enough in looks and passable at etiquette and dancing and all the other things a good lady was expected to know, but she'd win no beauty contests and the family was perfectly content to negotiate the one proposal she received and marry her off to another lord in Kalria. Their second son, Fedir, was an average knight in all respects; the third, Vasyl, entered the priesthood and wasn't really noticable for anything at all.

Yelena, as the second daughter and fifth child, didn't have many expectations placed on her. Grow up, do well enough at her lessons, and she'd surely receive an offer or two for her hand - but of course no more than that, for the Kozels knew their place and to hope for more would be out of their league.

And she was mostly content to live up to what was expected of her and to aim no higher than her parents deemed proper; she learned her etiquette, learned to read and write (only the books her parents felt were "proper"), learned to dance (decently but not spectacularly), learned everything that was set before her, but only as well as was necessary - nothing ever seemed to catch her interest enough for her to truly excel at it.

The one thing she did allow herself, improper though her family said it was, was to sneak out and help the house's gardener with the flower gardens. She spent as much time in the gardens as she was able, despite her mother constantly calling her back in - too much sun would ruin her complexion and dear Yelena what were you thinking kneeling down on the grass in a white dress, don't the maids have enough to do without spending extra time on your laundry...

Mariya cut Yelena less and less slack as she grew older, and by the time Yelena was fourteen, she was mostly forbidden to spend her time as she used to, and only managed to sneak out for a bit here and there. Her parents arranged her a marriage with some nice boy from another house who she'd met exactly twice before the plans were made, and life continued as usual in the Kozel house.

Until Yelena found a dusty little journal filled with other peoples' words tucked away in the back of her dresser.

And the same day, she fell ill with horrible bouts of coughing, a fever, fainting fits, aches and pains...the symptoms didn't match up to any illness the doctors knew, perhaps because they kept changing. Sometimes it looked like a cold, sometimes the flu, sometimes it looked horrible and sometimes it looked hopeful. Yelena's parents postponed the wedding and shut her up in her room to recover.

They're still waiting.
p e r s o n a l i t y
Yelena is a fairly obedient daughter who prefers not to make waves. She's been raised to do as she's told, toe the line, and not to think so highly of herself that she should aspire to be more, and so she does just that. She's polite, sympathetic, and a bit sheltered from the real world, since her parents only saw fit to educate her about the parts of it she'd find herself dealing with someday.

Her one indulgance was always sneaking out to help with the gardening, but much as she loved it, she didn't really have the spine to argue when her parents put an end to it - which is the story of her life, really. She might want this or that, but if her family knows it and tells her she can't have it, she simply complies, and though she might dream about it after that, she won't go after it.

Sometimes she thinks she might like to have a backbone, to argue with her parents and talk about what she wants, but good noble daughters aren't allowed them, and Yelena is a good noble daughter first and foremost, so she tells herself she's content to dream of it and do nothing more.

Yelena has always had a delicate appearance, with pale skin and long golden hair and a slight build. Illness has only made this seem more pronounced. She speaks softly, and though she used to simply pause a lot because she was always thinking about what to say before she said it, now she pauses to cough and sneeze and catch her breath - she's far more easily winded than she used to be. She's graceful, although you wouldn't guess it now because she's kept to her room to prevent trouble with the fainting spells she's developed as of late.
